5 Proposal Blunders You Want to Avoid
Marriage proposals, in theory, should be simple
. You're asking a yes-or-no question, after all. But, then again, I'm a guy. We think in simple terms. Women, on the other hand, start imagining this day at 12 years old. And guess what, fellas; the ball's in her court, so you have to play by her rules. You know your partner better than anyone else, though. So, instead of bombarding you with ideas for how to present that
diamond engagement ring, I'm going to keep this simple and objectivejust how guys thinkand tell you 5 mistakes you don't want to make when proposing.
Don't show up empty-handed
This is probably the biggest mistake you could make. I say probably in order to leave room for the really bizarrebut let's stick to the normal for now. Of course, your proposal, which is a declaration of your love and commitment to the relationship, should be enough. But, you've got to remember, guys. Your lady has played this moment over and over again in her head for years. And, in those re-runs there's an
engagement ring. A girl wants something to show for her engagement. An engagement ring makes it 100% legitimate. So, take some time, ask her friends for help if need be, and buy an engagement ring.
Don't jump the gun
Your girl is perfect. She's intelligent. She's gorgeous. She loves beer and wings on Sundays during football season. But, cool your jets, my man. Sure, she's awesome, but your head needs to be clear of that initial infatuation stage before you pop the question. You need to endure some real relationship challenges and become acquainted with all her moods, good and bad. Also, you want to wait to receive signs that she's ready to commit as well. You don't want to jump the gun and get the unsettling response, "Let me think about it."
Avoid Audiences
It's easy to get excited about an upcoming proposal. You want to share it with everyone. But, the most important person you need to share it with is your hoped bride-to-be. There are a couple reasons why you should avoid audiences. First off, you don't want to put pressure on her. You want her to feel comfortablenot like dozens of eyes are beaming down on her waiting for a response. Also, once she, hopefully, says yes, the two of you will want to be in your own little love bubble. You don't want to be bombarded. However, it should be noted that this doesn't deem all public places off limits. Don't be afraid to go back to the spot of your first date or first kiss. But, try to keep it private.
Don't be a blabber mouth
Loose lips sink ships. And, as it turns out, they also sink proposal ideas. If you want to stay traditional and ask her father's permission, go for it. But, other than that, keep your mouth shut. No matter how much you trust someone, they're still capable of blabbing. It's exciting news. But you want this to be a special moment for you and her to share. If she hears about the proposal and how you plan to do it, there's a good chance it won't feel as special to her. Save story time for after she says yes.
Know the right moment
Guys think in simple terms. Once you've decided to propose, you just want to get it out there and get it over with. That's not to say you don't care. But, it's tough to sit and wait with something like that in your back pocket. But, timing is everything. People are going to hear the story of your proposal for years to come. You don't want it to consist of, "Well, we ordered Chinese food, and as I took a bite into my beef and broccoli, he asked me to marry him." Plan it out and wait for the right moment. If you plan a big dinner and you find a few glasses of champagne later that she's slurring her words, hold off. Don't worry, though, with some common sense, you'll be just fine.
